1. Reflect on your story

Your brand story is vital to creating the perfect beauty logo. When customers trust and connect with your mission, your logo should reflect those same emotions.

Start by digging deeper into your “why”.

What was your reason for creating a beauty company?

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help generate beauty logo ideas:

  • What does your brand stand for?
  • What’s your story? How did you get here?
  • Why did you create the company? What is your unique selling proposition?
  • What are your goals moving forward?

2. Brainstorm adjectives

For this step, write down a list of adjectives that best describe your brand. Think about how you want others to perceive your brand when they look at your logo. Consider the emotions and feelings you want to evoke in others. Maybe you want to evoke feelings of excitement, playfulness, or luxury, or perhaps you want to evoke feelings of wellness and health.

Write down 15 adjectives on a sheet of paper and then begin to narrow them down to three or four. This won’t be easy, but narrowing down your adjectives will help you define your brand and guide you to design the perfect beauty logo.

3. Create a mood board

Now we’re getting into the fun part! You can choose to either make a physical (think paper, scissors, and a glue stick!) or a digital mood board using free tools like Canva or Figma.

Start by going on websites like Unsplash, Pinterest, or Etsy to look for images that represent the list of adjectives you’ve written. If your list of adjectives included the words “modern” or “playful”, what images might match that adjective? Then take a look at other well-known makeup brand logos and see what kind of feelings you get from each. This will also help to guide your overall mood board vibe.

Be flexible and have fun with this exercise!

4. Choose a Type of Logo

As you start getting down to the nitty-gritty of putting your beauty logo ideas on paper, three common types of logos tend to work best for beauty brands. Experiment with different versions of each one, and add them to your mood board.

1. Wordmark

If you have a shorter brand name, this is the perfect logo to test out! This is where your typography (the art of arranging and designing font text) can stand out and be the centrepiece of your beauty logo.

There are plenty of eye-catching ways to shape and arrange your brand name. You can combine this approach with other logo styles (listed below) and experiment with color and typography to create the perfect look for your brand.

2. Monogram logo

If you want your beauty logo to look good in small spaces, consider designing a monogram logo. Use your brand name’s first letter or initials and turn it into a bold, memorable visual. Since it’s compact, you can easily use it in favicons, buttons, and social media profile images, and it will fit on small surface areas such as lipstick tubes or lids, when you launch your next makeup line.

3. Combination

Play around with combining your wordmark logo and your monogram logo. The images and text can be side-by-side, nested within one another, or combined in any way you want!

5. Look for patterns

Now, take a step back and look at your mood board. What patterns can you pick out

Look for color and style patterns. For example, you can look for floral patterns, straight edges, grey scale, or a colorful palette.

Whatever patterns you pick out from your mood board is the cohesive style you should use for your beauty brand logo!

6. Review well-known makeup brand logo design inspirations

Wordmark logo examples

In the beauty industry, you see a lot of logos that are solely wordmarked. Milk, MAC Cosmetics, and Anastasia Beverly Hills are all good examples. Their lettering, spacing, and styling make their name unique enough to be recognized.

You can apply these insights to your beauty logo design. As these examples show, it all comes down to the right combination of design elements to evoke an emotion or feeling. From color and style to the placement of letters and images, each detail works together in harmony to reflect your brand in a meaningful way.

7. Sketch, review, refine

When you start designing your logo, go back to your mood board and your trusted well well-known cosmetic brand acquaintances to review what you’ve designed. Sketch, review, and refine again until you’re satisfied with how the logo reflects your brand.
