Everything you need to know about the mob wife trend

Step aside clean girl and quiet luxury aesthetics, the audacious and unbothered glamour of the mob wife trend is taking social media by storm. From fashion to beauty and everything in between, this maximalist trend is inspiring everyone to channel their inner mob wife icons like Sharon Stone in Casino and Drea de Matteo in The Sopranos, or more recently Sofia Vergara in Griselda. Think over-the-top winged eyeliner, smokey eyes, overlined lips, big teased hair, and everything gold and glamorous. It has a certain charm that makes you want to put on your highest stilettos and conquer the world.

Evidently, less is no longer more. Let's take a look at the trend that is making women feel powerful and fabulous.

History

A big part of this trend’s appeal is the boost of confidence that comes with it. Mob wives are portrayed in pop culture as fun, confident, and unapologetic. And they own it!

The mafiosa look isn’t exactly new. Though it has its own contemporary flair, the look is largely inspired by iconic mob wives of TV and cinema, combining elements from the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000’s, and has been reclaimed multiple times. The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola shared in an Instagram post that his original inspiration for the style of Talia Shire‘s character in the movie, Connie Corleone, was a “sultry, delightful Italian princess”.

Some theories suggest that HBO’s marketing team is behind the TikTok trend as part of the 25th anniversary of The Sopranos, while influencer Sarah Jordan Arcuri claims to have popularized it, and calls herself the “Mob Wife Aesthetic CEO”.

Regardless of the multiple origins and variations of the trend, we can all agree that mob wife is bringing full glam back after a few seasons of minimalist aesthetics, and it will be setting the tone for other microtrends this 2024.

The mob wife makeup look

  • Smokey eyes and winged eyeliner
Draw a cat eye sharp enough to kill a man, as Taylor Swift says. The highlight of every femme fatale makeup look is the combination of an immaculate wing liner and smokey eyeshadow. Yes, this trend is officially bringing dirty smokey eyes back into the spotlight and we’re here for it.

We recommend: Eyeshadow Palette in Caramel Kiss (BLNK-MB-01-04-SP-ETM101), and Color Rich Pro Line in Black (BLNK-MB-01-04-GE-CPL104)

  • Defined brows and eyelashes

Complete the piercing gaze by framing it with the bold and sultry statement of defined brows and dramatic lashes.

We recommend: Luxury Mascara in Black (BLNK-MB-01-04-MC02) and Automatic Eyebrow Pencil in Charcoal (BLNK-MB-01-02-BP-AB6)

  • Heavy blush and sculpted face

Say goodbye to barely-there makeup. Bronzer, blush, contour and highlight play a crucial role in achieving the sculpted features and dimension of the mob wife trend. We want sharp facial features that scream power and confidence.

We recommend: Bronzer (BLNK-MB-01-02-BR-BRZ01), Ultimate Contour Kit in Natural Glow (BLNK-C-01-02-CH-UC31701), and Blush Palette in Squish (BLNK-MB-01-02-BL-KBL33)

  • Overlined lips

Preferably in powerful shades of deep red and nude, the bolder the better. Opt for matte pigments for a long-lasting glam.

We recommend: Lip Liner in Cinnamon (BLNK-CO-01-01-LP-LP68), Liquid to Matte Lipstick in Brickhouse (BLNK-MB-01-01-LML-LML06), and Luxury Cream Lipstick in Naughty Nude (BLNK-MN-01-01-LS-CP24-KB2)

  • Big teased hair

Bring out the rollers and strong-hold hairsprays, the slicked-back buns are out, textured and slightly undone hair is back. We are all about hairstyles that make a statement. Think Drea de Matteo’s Adriana La Cerva in The Sopranos with her big voluminous curls or messy Pamela Anderson style updos.
